AAR - Late War - Welsh Guards vs 512 Schwerepanzerjager - Breakthrough

Hi All welcome to another AAR.

This time instead of one of out usual 'we're preparing for a tournament' AAR's I've tried to craft two lists which should be very different but hopefully balanced in opposition. So before onto the AAR proper I thought I'd take you through the lists.

Welsh guards-  So why the welsh guards? Well it's been a while since the Cromwells made the tabletop - and they're fast - they're really fast. Oh and expensive! So how do you make a list for these guys ? Well let's start with the compulsory choices obviously - that's 10 veteran tanks - none of which can even scratch the front armour of the opposition. So what's the way (other than outflanking to kill big cats? Templates - well I decided to try the typhoon here - let's get the allied air superiority on the table. I like to also have a couple of other units for a rounded allied list - recon and arty - due to points. ( and also aesthetics) I've gone for 4 Stuart's as Recce, and some heavy mortars - this should mean that infantry is relatively vulnerable - whilst also providing some smoke as needed. The list is fast but made of glass! More of a scalpel than a sledge hammer I hope!

Schwerepanzerjager-  Firstly I want big cats! That's going to be all 4 Jagdtigers (I'm opting not to take Carius deliberately but he would be an excellent choice !) now to give some opposition to fast tanks zooming up the side lets take some Volksturm - no infantry to oppose them sadly but they should be good speed bumps! As there is air, a couple of Ostwinds would be nice, but only trained - finally some King Tigers would help make this feel like a real 'big cat' list - and with some spare points as always add Nebs. This list is I think a proper big cat list - but in a mobile battle with the Volksturm and Nebs deployed only one big cat (or Ostwinds) will start on the table....

Welsh Guards
  • 2 HQ Cromwells
  • 3 Cromwells + Challenger
  • 3 Cromwells + Challenger
  • 4 Stuart's with AA MG's
  • 4 Heavy Mortars
  • Limited Typhoon

  • 2 Jagdtigers
  • King Tiger
  • 2 Ostwinds

Guards Armoured - Crusader AA

Hi All

back again with another little unit I’ve been working on.
The Crusader AA I think is one of the coolest little vehicle around, I’ve not had much to do with crusaders before other than stealing a few turrets for my Staghound 3’s – though I’ve seen Alex’s.

AAR – Welsh Guards vs FJ’s – Road Block.

Hello All

Welcome once again to another exciting AAR. Once again I'm up against Winner’s FJ’s – but we thought we'd take a different approach to this game. For a start we're playing the mission ‘Road Block’ this was in the Wargames Illustrated back in September I think, but with it being a possibility at Corrivalry in February and also a nice different mission, we thought we'd give it a go.

We'd agreed before hand to slightly theme our forces, and also to pick matching armies, so I returned to my Welsh Guards and Dave went for Von de Heytes FJ’s.

Guards Lorried Rifles
  • HQ
  • Full Rifle Platoon
  • Full Rifle Platoon
  • 3 Cromwells and Challenger

Guards Armoured Recon - Redux

Hello All

This final post about contents from my guards recce box is looking at the non model pieces. A lot of these I mentioned in my review but with a bit of time I've got some deeper insights.

Guards - SP Anti Tank

Hi again all,

I'm back with another update for my Guards, this time the M10's.
Whenever I look at these guys I always have a small pang of jealousy about how much more fun their US counterpart is! Though the extra UK AT is always appreciated. I often consider how worth it is the extra AT to go from 14 in overlord to 15 in MG and I don't often see the benefit. But that is life you have the great glass hammer, though with more access to duckbills I do find them a better choice.

Guards - Recon - Stuarts

Well here I am again with yet more models. This time it is my Stuarts
I know Ben has done a recent exposé on the new ones from PSC but I like these ones from BF, though the box only comes with three I managed to source a 4th for various occasions.

AAR - Guards Armoured Recce vs FJ - Counter Attack

Welcome again boys and girls to another exciting AAR.

Myself and winner had decided we'd have a game, I'd suggested we both take lists from Overlord/Atlantik Wall, but when he turned up with a Bridge by Bridge List I instead grabbed my Market Garden list – After all we knew it would be Guards Armoured Recon Vs FJ no matter what!

We initially rolled Cauldron, but as that was also the last game we played against each other we re rolled and got Counter Attack.

Poor Bloody Infantry - and a Rural Bases review

Hello all,

Hell the Poor bloody infantry, from normandy to Italy, British, Canadian, Australian etc they are the backbone of the army!
For MG they have the bonus of having a 3+ save when riding on a tank, and also can be in m5 half tracks (soon to be bought) but in the end these guys do the grunt work of assaulting and holding while everyone else gets the glory!

Guards - Cromwells

Well this is the first post proper for my new project, and I've started by focusing on the stars of the show the Cromwells and Challengers.

These tanks do look very cool IMHO. There is something about their silhouette and speed which just wins out to me over the Sherman (even with jumbos etc available). On the other hand the Cromwell just seems strange with it's giant boxy turret.

The Ar(t)se of Building a Guards Armoured Recce List

Good morning happy blog followers!

So thanks to a few of you I’ve gone guards with my guards armoured recce box – and I’ll be damned if this isn’t the hardest list writing I’ve ever done!

The list in Market Garden has 2 drawbacks imho, firstly CV is expensive, secondly AT15 is expensive! So I’m going to try and show why building this list is just full of frustration.

Market Garden - Guards Armoured Recce Review

Hi again, I'm here again.

I know this has been out for a while and that Ben also did a review of the US cavalry box, but I still feel it's good to look over these boxes
So what do you get for your money? Well you have enough for the core of any Cromwell force (except rats in Normandy - you're missing a firefly!) You also get some decent support - M10's and Stuart's. Alongside this you get 2 very nice resin objective markers and all the dice, decals and markers for your force.

Where To Go With My Guards Armoured Recce Box Set?

Good morning boys and girls, Doctor Cox here and I have a question for you all!

Recently I came into possession of one of the Guards Armoured Recce Box Sets (BRAB07) and I'm in a quandary where to go. I thought I'd throw it open to the floor for some inspiration.
