Winner Dave's Soviet SU-100s

Hey all,

Finally got around to getting my own SU100s done and dusted, so Ben can finally get his back (Strictly speaking they were SU85Ms but no-one knew).
I did have these painted up a while ago, but didn't get around to painting the commander for ages.  As I have started my DShK on Trucks project I painted a commander plus a replacement Rota Razvedki rider that went missing.

One thing I've noticed is that I'm so much faster at this style of painting now.  The biggest change I've made since I started painting Russian tanks, is using Ammo by Mig's range of paints.  They are beautiful, go on so smooth and means that the time I used to spend mixing and thinning and mess creating is re-claimed.  That's a huge saving.
Now I know how the enamel filters and washes behave, I'm a lot more efficient at working with them and finally I hardly put any time into the tracks now, as I end up smothering on mud and stuff.

I'm quite fortunate that the green plus filter is an exact match for my T34s, which I painted with Tamiya paints.  In fact last game, I was really struggling to tell them apart, an issue I need to address with leaves and branches.
In game the SU100 brings fear and can be used to dictate your opponents movements.  I've found tanks try to hide from them as best they can, so to optimise this I find its best to intermingle them with a company of T34s.  On their own they are vulnerable and very easy to negate.  Smoke, assaulting infantry and side shots will nullify this incredibly expensive unit, so spread them out and support them.  Personally I don't like Cat Killer, I'd take volley fire any day.  That's not to say that there haven't been times it's proved useful, but I tend to ignore it and if I happen to be firing at over 16", then it's a brucey bonus, but I don't play to it.

Anyway, hope you like them.

Dave

    1. Yeah man, modulation all the way.
If you can be bothered look for my post on painting the T70, I go into a fair bit of detail on how I do it although things have changed a little bit since then...but not much.

  2. That is absolutely gorgeous! It looks like the work of Reuben of heresy brush and I can give little higher praise than that. The fact that you are painting armies to this standard is a great inspiration - I doff my cap sir!

    1. Lol, I wish that were true. I have learned an awful lot from that guy, so all praise to him :) in fact his new book has crept on to my Christmas wish list.
That said I'm quite happy with my standard of painting now but I think I need to work on getting some visually interesting details to make the models pop.
Thanks for the kind words, Paul.

    1. Sure thing...
I use Ammo by Mig Jimenez http://www.migjimenez.com/en/

I used 4 colours Russian 4B0 Dark Base, Base, Light Base and Highlight.

Saves so much time over mixing your own...I love them, btu not everyone is a fan.
