Team Yankee Preview - Air Support

Hello All

Welcome to the second update looking at the models coming out for Team Yankee. This week we are going to look at airpower.
For Team Yankee we can see two types of air support, ground attack planes and helicopters. Personally I love air support and I always want to try and get it into a game, not because I think it's effective (not for me anyway), but because I love the way it looks.

First up we have the Soviet Sukhoi Su-25 (known to NATO as the Frogfoot). It when into service in 1981 and is still used to this day. Armed with a GSh-30-2 30mm cannon and hard points for 4,000 kg (8,800 lb) worth or other equipment.
Next up we have the Mil Mi-24 (known to NATO as the Hind), this is a classic Cold War icon! The Hind came into service in 1972 and is still also still in use today. Armed with a 12.7 mm Yakushev-Borzov Yak-B Gatling gun, either a twin-barrel GSh-30K or twin-barrel GSh-23L and a load of other hard point equipment. This is the model I'm most looking forward to getting for Team Yankee.
Now onto the Americans and the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II. Known as the "Warthog", the A-10 is a beast of a plane armed with 30 mm GAU-8 Avenger cannon. This is another classic Cold War era plane and I'm sure we will see a lot of U.S. players using them,
The last picture for today is the Cobra helicopter. This is an upgraded version than the one we have seen in FOW Vietnam. You will notice the canopy is cubed not rounded for one of a few differences. In service since 1967 it is armed with a M197 20mm Vulcan Gatling gun plus a load of rockets and other hard point weapon systems.
Thanks for reading this update on Team Yankee, next week is the turn of the artillery so keep an eye out for that.

Thanks for reading

Ben

  1. How awesome are those! Battlefront look to be pulling all the stops out for this. I just hope the core infantry, tanks and APCs are in plastic.

  6. Team Yankee. Chieftain. Bring it on. Stand to and Advance to Contact. Both even more entertaining. Red Rising. May the plastic god have a decently reasonable price.

    1. I'm sorry to say it UB, but on this point you are incorrect.

Early in the development of the A-10, the test colour was a light blue-grey colour with large full colour markings (think the USAF air defense scheme from the late 1950s through to mid/late 1970s).

Then as the aircraft was going through operational testing, a number of camouflage paint schemes were trialed, including a two (maybe three) tone scheme consisting of light blue-grey colours (similar to the current A-10C 'low-viz scheme), and at least three variations of spotty schemes as part of the JAWS program.

However the two greens and one grey 'lizard' (also commonly referred to as 'European 1') scheme you see applied to the A-10 above was the standard camouflage scheme for the A-10 fleet throughout the 1980s and most if not all of the 1990s.
It was also applied to F4s, pretty much every aircraft in Military Airlift Command, trialed on the F-15E and F-16 (in ground support roles), and variations of it were applied to A7s and Strategic Air Command aircraft all during the period.

The pale blue/blue-grey you mention is either the trials colours, or more likely the much more recent scheme that the type has appeared in during operations in the sandbox and other places since the turn of the century.

Hopefully none of the above comes off as rude or condescending ... no offense intended.
